Freelance Studying Current User Base to Develop a New Web Experience

Freelance Project

December 2024- January 2025

Robinson Piano

What Is Robinson Piano?

This was a freelance project that focused upon studying an existing user base and determining how to improve the overall user experience. Surveys, usability testing, and qualitative research were completed in order to build a website giving users access to booking piano lessons, as well as a pianist for events.

Summary

Problem Identification

The website's navigation was unfocused and lacked an ability to inform users of important information. This self evident problem became increasingly obvious as user research was conducted and 40% of users stated the website was difficult to navigate.

Research

Summary

Research consisted primarily a seven question user survey, competitor research, and user analysis using online platforms such as Reddit,  and Quora.

Survey Questions

1. What was the most important factor while looking for a music teacher?

2. Have you ever visited the official Ruby Rublesky web-sight?

3. Are you a student, or a parent to a student?

4.What do you like most about your/your child’s experience with your music teacher?

5. How did you discover Ruby?

6.If there was anything you would change about your online experience, what would it be?

7. What was the most difficult information to find when visiting the web-sight?

Discoveries

1. It is evident in order to improve the current web platform, the following issues must be appropriately addressed;

2. Navigation 40% of responders noted a lack of navigation

3. Lesson Plans/teaching style (25% of responders noted the difficulty of finding information regrading this matter, as well as another 40% who stated they wanted more information about lesson plans. Additionally, nearly 80% of survey takers highlighted personality and teaching style as what they liked most about Mrs. Rublesky.

4. Highlighting Mrs. Rublesky as a person. 50% of survey responders stated personality was most important when choosing a music teacher followed by credentials at 37.5%.

These are the major takeaways from the survey, and I believe studying these results gives me a finger on the pulse of Mrs. Rublesky’s customer base, and what is most important to them; giving me invaluable information for the upcoming design process

Discovery Summary

Work-Shopping

Summary

After analyzing the research data, I created a flowchart to detail the flow of the website. This was followed by the creation of several wire-frames of the main pages such as, About, Contact, Homepage, and Lessons.

Flowchart

Surprisingly, the research pointed users having less of an interest in pricing, and the main concern they had was the personality of the teacher. Because of this, I reworked some of my initial ideas which had a large focus on price, and instead shifted the main focus around who Ruby is as a teacher. This included elements such as how lessons were done, what kind of music she teaches, and her overall approach to helping students learn.

Wire Frames

The wireframes were built after a workable flowchart, and personas had been created. I took the information provided by the culmination of my research and within the course a a few hours had sketched wire frames of what the website would look like, and how it would work.

Creating The Platform

Once the wire frames had been completed, a short period of reflection and editing was performed in order to iron out the larger kinks in the design. I was then ready to go to the next step, creating the actual website.

Summary

Process

The website was originally created using Wix, and the owner wanted their site to remain on this platform. therefore, following my carefully laid out wire-frames, and keeping my research on hand at all times, I carefully reconstructed the existing website into an entirely new site that offered a user centric design.

The Final Results

Summary

Due to the in depth research I performed I was able to compile and invaluable collection of information I was able to build an efficient, user centric website that addressed all the most important concerns of the identified user group.

Key Changes

1. An increased focus upon important factors such as policy, pricing, and facts about Ruby as a teacher.

2. The elimination of unneeded materials that were found to confuse users (through the survey).

3. User centric design that improved website flow and ensured users could find important materials, and booking information easily.
