What is Craft It?

Craft It is an app mock-up designed to make it easy for parents to spend quality time with their kids exploring the world of crafts. The app makes it fun, and easy for kids to learn new crafts, and enables both kids and parents to build a library of their favorite craft projects.

Problem Identification

It is evident that in this modern and digital world where parents are busy, they often find it difficult to spend time with their kids. Digital products and tools, occupy a central role in people’s lives, consequently, this centrality can often interfere with interpersonal relationships. However, this does not need to be the case. “Craft It” avoids these pitfalls by encouraging parents to build bonds with their kids by introducing creative play, improving the quality of time they spend together.

Research

Research began by identifying the problem and empathizing with potential Users. From information gleaned from; interviews, empathy maps, user journeys, and competitor research, personas and detailed user analysis charts were created.

Taking it Simply to Start

White boards, post-up notes, and quick sketches are imperative to the success of any project. Though seemingly overly simplistic, they give the designer a way of playing with ideas without becoming to involved or connected to one idea/design.

Early Designs

The early designs were meant to have a immense focus upon simplicity, and easy navigation, while also maintaining a playful sense in the design.

Results

The result of this project has been a high fidelity mock-up and the discovery of the importance of using technology to strengthen family bonds.

Important Discoveries

Technology and Bond Building

The most important discovery during research is that there are few options for parents regarding crafting apps that is especially designed for them and their children. Frequently, apps are designed with one or the other in mind, however, Craft It was created to help parents spend time with their kids.

Putting It all together

Assembling the research and hours of user centric design, the final product is an app mock-up that gives a look into how the app would function in real time. The app was tested in usability testing forms, and while it did not reach the phase of actually reaching a consumer, it was a success in its high fidelity prototype in designed in Figma.
